Having gripped people from in and around the area, Wales Rally GB could be set to win a major tourism award.
The organisers announced that the event has been shortlisted in the National Tourism Awards for Wales. Alongside just three other finalists, the FIA World Rally Championship round has been chosen for the Best Event (Large) category. The winner of the award will be announced at the Vale Resort in Hensol at a special ceremony on March 25th.
Judges for the Best Event category picked events that they say “really put Wales on the map”. These events have been able to attract visitors from outside the local area and raise the profile of Wales. Among the traits that events showcased were evidence of a positive economic impact on the local community as well as a successful marketing and promotion programme. Other factors taken into account included commitment to safety and excellent organisation.
Managing director of Wales Rally GB Ben Taylor said: “The rally makes a huge contribution to Wales on so many different fronts. As a high profile world championship event, it generates huge global expose and attracts 80,000 visitors, the majority of whom come from outside Wales, who help to contribute more than £10 million to the Welsh economy.
“The rally also makes a significant contribution to the community in the region, raising more than £40,000 for local charities and good causes.”
As well as these factors, 1,000 Welsh students were engaged in a STEM event that was organised around the rally. Mr Taylor said that he thought it was an excellent accolade that the Wales Rally GB has been recognised as an event that helps to boost Wales’ international profile and offers a unique and unforgettable experience.
This year, Wales Rally GB will be based in Deeside in north Wales, with the track taking cars through the forests in and around Snowdonia. It will be held on November 12th to 15th.
