Volvo has promised that it will be releasing the cleanest and most powerful sports utility vehicle (SUV) that the world has seen so far.
Its new XC90 promises that drivers will no longer have to choose between power and environmental care when buying an SUV as the all-wheel drive seven-seater car is set to deliver both when it is released later this year.
The car can offer up to 400 horsepower but can produce carbon dioxide emission of as low as 60 g/km, which makes it the SUV with the greatest balance ever seen between these two aspects.
As well as cleanliness and power, there are also a range of Drive-E engine options from Volvo that can provide great performance and fuel efficiency. All of the options within the Drive-E engine range set them apart from others because they are all four-cylinder engines.
Speaking about the Drive-E engines, senior vice president of Research and Development at Volvo Car Group Peter Mertens said: “With our new Drive-E powertrains, we have created a family of intelligent petrol and diesel engines with power curves that give exciting driveability at the same time as delivering world-beating fuel economy,
“With seven people in the new XC90, carbon dioxide emissions per person and kilometre are outstandingly low.”
In time, Volvo has said that the Drive-E engines will be introduced across its range as the four-cylinder solution promises all the power of a large engine but with added efficiency and cleanliness.
For the XC90, the top of the range engine choice will be the Twin Engine. This will carry the T8 badge and promises to be be a plug-in electric car, hybrid car and high-performance car all at once.
The hybrid mode is the default and is recommended for use during normal driving. It uses a two-litre, four-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged Drive-E petrol engine that powers the front wheels, while the rear wheels are powered by an 80 horsepower (60 kW) electric motor.
To fill in the bottom end of the power range, the car utilises the supercharger to give it a much bigger feel, while the turbocharger gets going once airflow around the car builds up. The car also benefits from immediate torque because of the electric motor working on the rear wheels.
Yet, if it is kindness to the environment and quietness that the driver wants then they can easily swap to pure electric power at the touch of a button. This emission-free option offers a range of around 25 miles but can immediately swap back to the petrol engine and electric motor when it is needed.
But if the Drive-E petrol engines do not interest drivers then there are still plenty of other engine options that they can choose from. For example, they can opt for the D5 twin turbo diesel engine, which offers 225 horsepower and 470 Nm of torque. It is also the best in its class for fuel consumption at around 47mpg. Also there is the D4 turbo diesel engine, which provides 190 horsepower, 400 Nm of torque and offers fuel consumption of around 56 mpg.
