It used to be called the Dad’s Day Out, but the now-called Supercar Event, 2013, was a Top Gear test track-based treat for all members of the hundreds of families that attended over this weekend. There was even a little sunshine, a bit of celeb-spotting with Chris Evans, and a wonderful range of supercars lapping at serious speeds – all in aid of The Children’s Trust.
Performance Direct were there to support the annual event with their UK-travelling show stand, a couple of crowd-pleasing Peel mini cars, show babes Faye and Michelle and their own Maserati supercar, all part of the two days of packed show action. In fact, much money was raised for the needy kids by the cute Peel cars, with show-goers very happy to pop a pound in the pot to have their pictures taken in the world’s smallest cars. Even silent-speeder, the Stig, couldn’t resist the miniature Peel wonders.
If you love supercars but don’t have one on your driveway – like most of us – the Supercar Event really is a great chance to get up close and personal with some premium performance cars. Funds were raised for the Children’s Trust by generous supercar owners taking paying passengers out for two hot laps of the Top Gear test track at Dunsfold Park. And with two big straights and those famously complex Top Gear corners – Gambon caught a few drivers out – those hot laps were worth every exciting penny.
Cars of note included the McLaren MP4-12C, a Lamborghini Aventador and a Lexus LFA. All super-rare and super-fast. Exhaust note of the day however went to a prancing horse or two a little older than the aforementioned new ultra-cars, with a pair of Ferrari 355 V8s sounding simply high-revving, F1-stunning.
The Supercar event is one of those rare performance-inspired shows that lets the crowd get really close to the action. Not only were the hot laps a great way to sample the excitement of true supercars, but with spectators only feet away from the start line and many drivers pulling off impressive race-starts, supercar fans were as close as possible to the noise, smell and theatre of these incredible cars all day long. You can’t beat the buzz of a 700bhp Aventador pulling away with all the power it can muster.
Mix in some live bands, plenty of sweet-smelling food stands and radio DJ and TV star Chris Evans meeting and greeting the show-goers and you’ve got a great family day out; all in aid of the Children’s Trust. No wonder the Supercar Event was packed with smiling faces.
