Volkswagen has released its newly designed Scirocco at the Geneva Motor Show, marking 40 years since the car was first released at the exhibition.

Since its 1974 unveiling, the model has gone on to sell a million units and the manufacturer is now poised to make its next move in the market.

The latest incarnation of the car comes with a whole host of new features over its predecessor. This begins with a range of advanced engines, offering up to 280 PS in the top specification 2.0-litre Scirocco R.

It comes with bespoke bumpers and 18-inch ‘Cadiz’ alloy wheels, helping it to provide a truly distinct look, and produces 15 PS more than the previous version.

Others in the range include the 1.4-litre petrol with 125 PS, an all-new 2.0-litre 180 PS unit which replaces the 1.4-litre 160 PS version, and the 220 PS which delivers 19 per cent more fuel efficiency than the outgoing 2.0-litre TSI 210 PS.

There are also two diesel alternatives, pushing the range up to six new turbocharged direct-injection engines – all of which meet EU6 emissions standards, delivering between 68.9 and 34.9 mpg.

These come in the form of 150 PS and 184 PS models – both 2.0-litre. These will deliver the top economy mileage available.

Drivers will also be able to choose from a six-speed manual and six- or seven-speed DSG gearbox.

As a whole, the range will include a revised front bumper, coming with aerodynamic blades in the outer section – mimicking the latest generation Golf GTI. It includes the indicator lights, daytime running lights and fog lights.

Some models also come with optional bi-xenon headlights, where the daytime running lights are LEDs found in the main headlights.

Moving towards the rear of the car, all new Sciroccos now come with LED tail lights and a reshaped bumper to deliver a more purposeful look.

Furthermore, the changes are continued on the inside of the model. This is in the shape of a new dashboard, featuring new-look dials, and an auxiliary instrument cluster located above the centre console.

This includes features such as the chronometer, the charge pressure and the oil temperature gauge – harking back to the 1974 version.

It will be available to order in the UK in May this year, and is sure to be a popular addition to the Scirocco range.

The sleek and stylish hatchback is a muscular yet sporty vehicle, delivering the best of both worlds for customers.

With Volkswagen, you can always be sure that quality is at the forefront of any new design, and this won’t have changed for the new Scirocco.

Despite all of the exterior and interior changes, it still has the beating heart of the manufacturer’s power and impressive performance capabilities.
