Top 5 super-awesome convertibles

There’s been little peeks of sunshine at some point every day for the last two weeks and we’re pretty sure that we had a full day of summer recently.

With this in mind, it got us thinking about going on a bit of jolly to the beach or in the countryside and there’s no better way to enjoy your drive than by hopping into a convertible.

They’re pretty cool cars in general and everyone loves the feeling of the wind in their hair – even if you don’t have any, they still have an ability to make anyone look rad.

Alright, so calling something super-awesome like we did just then has the potential to drop its cool factor by about ten points instantly but, trust us when we say that you’re going to love our top five choices.

The Audi S5 (foldaway roof, of course)

In general Audi’s are pretty sweet cars, from motorsport to road-worthy vehicles, you’re never likely to be too disappointed with these models.

The S5 Cabriolet means that there’s also something special for the summer market; it’s a soft top, which means that it’s not going to be the quickest to put up and down, but aesthetically it’s a knock out.

It’s a great little runaround with a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine that boasts an output of 328bhp and charges from 0-62mph in just five seconds.

BMW 428i Convertible

This is already a great coupe, boasting strong performance and efficiency, but it looks even better as a convertible.

It’s quite a sexy car – as these things go – and it has a power folding hardtop, meaning that you can have the roof back sharpish if the rain comes on. And let’s face it, we live in Britain, this is a highly likely situation.

Powering the vehicle is a choice of two petrol engines and one diesel unit, meaning that there’s plenty performance for any kind of driver to enjoy.

Volkswagen Beetle

Although it might not be to everyone’s tastes – it’s perhaps not really a model that those who consider themselves seriously nuts about cars will enjoy – but we think that, as a convertible, the VW Beetle’s appearance takes on a quirky 1950s edge.

Let’s not forget the fact that the VW Beetle has won itself buckets worth of awards, so get yourself into one of these and crank up the Ray Charles.

We particularly enjoy the convertible version of the Beetle Dune; made to look like golden sand with the TDi version the most efficient of the five engines thanks to 118g/km of CO2 emissions.

 

Jaguar F-TYPE SVR

Jaguar is referring to the latest incumbent of its F-TYPE model as an all-weather sportscar, which it certainly is – thanks to the hardtop roof.

Not only this, but the model is actually the first SVR from the manufacturer and the fastest of all those that carry the F-TYPE badge.

Tell me about the engine! We hear you shouting. Well, it’s 5.8-litre V8 engine has an output of 567bhp and 700Nm worth of torque.

What’s the sprint time? Why, it’s 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds.

How fast is the top speed? It’ll manage 200mph, fancy that!

 

Mazda MX-5

It might seem unusual that a Mazda has made it into our top five, but this MX-5 model is an impressive runner and it looks real snazzy with its machine metal grey paint job. You’ve got to be committed to that though – sponges at the ready to keep it super shiny.

The model was unveiled at the International Motor Show in New York in March to rigorous praise and it’s easy to see why.

Its hardtop stows away easily at speeds up to six mph and there’s LOADS of bootspace, which is a concern for many on convertible models.

Enjoy the choice of two petrol engines and in particular a SKYACTIV-G 2.5T direct-injection unit – it’s seriously impressive on the open road.
