The new Audi TT is arguably the best yet. Its styling applied modern lines to the classic coupe and maintained its reputation for superb handling and performance. The car also premiered the brand’s phenomenal Virtual Cockpit system – a masterclass in optimising interior layout via cutting edge technology.

As splendid as the regular third-gen TT is, a souped-up RS version was always going to happen; it was just a question of when. The answer to that is now, with orders being taken for the TT RS from late September. But how does the RS treatment transform the TT?

With 394bhp, the TT RS will be the most powerful to go into production. A five-cylinder 2.5-litre TFSI petrol engine is linked to a seven-speed automatic transmission to hit 62mph in 3.7 seconds. That’s for the fixed-roof coupe model, it stretches to 3.9 seconds in the convertible roadster version.

As a rule, top speed is limited to 155mph for both but that can be raised to 174mph if the buyer chooses to pay extra for the Dynamic Package Plus, which also adds a sports exhaust system to enhance that bellowing exhaust note.

Compared to the entry level TT, the body of the TT RS sits 10mm lower to the road with 19-inch wheels as standard (20-inch seven-spoke wheels are also available). Brakes are boosted too, with eight-piston 370mm calipers.

The TT RS will be the first production Audi to come with matrix OLED lights at the rear, providing an exclusive and impressive visual touch. These comprise four wafer-thin units to create a 3D design, emitting a homogeneous, high-contrast light.

Aside from that stupendous 12.3-inch virtual cockpit system in front of the steering wheel, the interior also features super sports seats, upholstered in fine nappa leather, while the steering wheel is wrapped in sport leather and alcantara.

On-the-road prices start from £51,800 for the coupe and £53,550 for the drop-top roadster.
