Mercedes-Benz has added another member to the phenomenally successful and ridiculously good-looking E-Class family – the E-Class Coupe – which will go on sale in the UK from April 2017.

Following on from the estate and all-terrain variants, the two-door coupe model is based heavily on the original saloon-shaped E-Class, but boasts a more S-Class-inspired look to give anyone that was considering buying a BMW 6 Series something to think about.

Exterior

The exterior uses clear, sensual lines for a sleek profile, and debuts new two-part LED rear lights and LED multibeam headlamps.

Inside, there’s the usual premium finish you’d expect in any modern Merc, with two optional high-resolution 12.3-inch screens, merged under a single lens to create a floating widescreen cockpit effect.

Size-wise, the new E-Class Coupe is notably larger than its predecessor. Stretching for more than 4.8 metres, it is now 12.3cm longer than before, and 7.4cm wider at 1.86 metres. With a height of 1.43 metres, it is 3.2cm taller than the old model too.

The size upgrades are also evident inside, with rear occupants getting 7.4cm more legroom and an extra 1.5cm headroom. They sound like minor changes, but they make the world of difference. There’s 1.8cm more headroom in the front too.

In terms of engines, UK buyers will be able to choose from the 240bhp E300 that can reach 62mph in 6.4 seconds, returning 44mpg combined and emitting 147g/km of CO2, or the flagship three-litre E400, with 328bhp and a 5.3 second 0-62mph sprint.

Eventually, there will be an ‘AMG-lite’ in the form of the 396bhp E43, preceding a full-fat 604bhp V8 E63 AMG Coupe.

Mercedes will start accepting orders for the new E-Class Coupe from the end of 2016, with the first models being delivered in April 2017.

How much they will cost isn’t clear now, but expect a small uplift in price over the equivalent saloon E-Class.
