We’ve put a convertible from Mercedes and BMW head-to-head, comparing what each brings to the table and ultimately deciding which we’d rather take out for a drive.

First up is the BMW M4 Convertible, a performance convertible that delivers controlled performance and comfortable practicality, along with some pretty impressive sounds!

Then we have the Mercedes AMG’s S65 Cabriolet which is luxurious and stands out from the range of S-Class Cabriolet models thanks to, among other things, those chrome touches and unique wheel design.

Engine

With the M4 you get a straight-six, 3 litre, twin-turbo engine offering maximum torque of 406lb ft at 1850rpm.

The S65 on the other hand produces 630hp and 737lbft of torque with a twin-turbocharged, 6 litre V12 engine.

Speed

BMW’s top speed is 155mph, getting from 0-60mph in just 4.6 seconds and the acceleration is fantastic.

However, if its more speed you’re after, Mercedes gives you the option of raising their own 155mph top speed up to a startling 186mph and shave 0.6 seconds off the M4’s 0-60 time.

Roof

When you buy a convertible car, you want a quick switch between roof up and down modes, right?

Fortunately, the roof on both cars takes around 20 seconds to stow away, which is a particularly beautiful process on the M4, so when the sun does come out you can whip that roof off in next to no time.

Interior

Both cars seat four people easily and in the BMW there is a Merino leather interior whilst the sport seats in the Mercedes are nappa leather.

Features

Each BMW M4 Convertible has two trim options, the upgrade giving you a 17bhp power increase, and generally provides a refined driving experience.

One of the s65 Cabriolet’s features is a head-up display including a visualisation of the engine speed and current gear that is exclusive to AMG.

The Mercedes AMG s65 includes many upmarket features and little finishing touches such as a carbon-fibre and aluminium engine cover signed by the technician who assembled the engine, whilst every custom built M4 convertible is crafted from bespoke, race-derived parts.

And the winner is…

After considering what each of these luxury convertibles has to offer, personally the Mercedes AMG s65 comes out on top as it has the upper hand when it comes to speed, exclusive features and looks.
