The Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship Round 1 took place at Silverstone 24th March 2012.  It saw the first win for Azteca / Neil Garner / Strata21 amongst some serious competition.

The Championship is based around GT cars with Le Mans levels of performance such as Porsche 911 RSR’s, Ferrari GT2’s, down to Aston Martin GT4’s and Ginetta G50’s.

The endurance races last for a minimum of 2-3 hours with pitstops to allow for driver changes.  The whole racing season is covered by the Championship and covers such iconic racing circuits as Silverstone, Donington, Brands Hatch and Spa.

The first round was taken by Javier Morcillo, Manuel Cintrano and Paul White in the Azteca / Neil Garner / Strata21 Mosler but the early racing was a fierce three-way battle for the lead.

In qualifying most of the fastest times sat around the 2:10 until a final run by Javier Morcillo put the Mosler on pole position with a time of 2.03.473 with Andy Schulz responding with a time just one-tenth slower in Paul Bailey’s new Michelotto Ferrari 430 GT2.  Mike Millard secured third position just behind by a second and a half.

The race lasted for 80 laps as the three hour mark was hit and winner Javier Morcillo celebrated by skimming along the pit wall to take the flag.  It was the first Britcar win for the team.

The Britcar season has not seen such a mixture of new and old which many feel has rejuvenated the Championship.  With Donington next month it looks like a great season ahead.
