We weren’t sure that its awe-inspiring design could be improved but we’ve been proved wrong by this – the Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Volante – which does away with the coupe’s ‘double-bubble’ roof for some classy top-down action.
For those unfamiliar with Aston’s naming process: ‘Volante’ translates as ‘convertible’ in Aston Martin language but more tellingly, ‘flying’ in Italian, which is pretty much what you’d be doing if you tested the car’s performance with the roof down.
Just like the fixed-roof model, the Vanquish Zagato Volante is powered by Aston Martin’s iconic six-litre V12 engine, enhanced to produce 592bhp and hit 60mph in 3.7 seconds.
Aston Martin and Zagato have been collaborating on cars for more than half a century, with their partnership dating back to 1960’s DB4 GT Zagato race car. Zagato also worked its magic on the DB7 Vantage Zagato in 2002, 2003’s DB AR1 and 2011’s V12 Vantage.
So what does Zagato bring to the convertible Vanquish? There are round tail light reflectors that use the same ‘bladed’ LED technology seen on Aston Martin’s Vulcan supercar. Twin cowls on the rear blend into the leading edge of the luggage compartment, which conceals a bespoke folding hood derived from the mechanism used in the Vanquish Volante.
There are also carbon fibre sills around the lower body to create a pronounced horizontal emphasis that runs the length of the car.
Inside, rich and highly luxurious materials including herringbone carbon-fibre, anodized bronze detailing and the finest Bridge of Weir leather embellish the cabin. A unique signature ‘Z’ quilt pattern is stitched on both seat and door sections, while the trademark Zagato ‘Z’ is embossed on the headrests and stitched into the centre console.
Aston hasn’t indicated how much they’d want for one of the 99 Vanquish Zagato Volantes but it is expected to command an asking price in the region of half a million pounds when customer deliveries commence in 2017.
