Porsche fans have got a day of racing, displays and demonstrations coming up from both new models and classic cars on September 21st.
The new Brands Hatch Festival is to be brought to Kent by the Porsche Club GB, making this the club’s first national event for 2014.
It comes at the same time as the 40th anniversary of the 911 Turbo and, fittingly, there will be a celebration of the model as part of the festival. A parade of more than 60 examples of the Porsche 911 Turbo, from the 1970s up until the most recent model, will travel around the track on Sunday afternoon.
The event was arranged by the circuit owner MSV, who worked with Porsche Club GB and was supported by Porsche Cars GB.
Among the cars that are set to be on show are the 356 released in the 1950s to the 918 Spyder super sportscar, which is the very latest plug-in hybrid.
There will also be a theme of endurance racing to celebrate Porsche’s return to the top LMP1 class at Le Mans this year, with the fact that the Brands Hatch circuit has a history of motorsport adding to the feel of this.
Two of the cars that have been victorious at Le Mans in the past will wow visitors to the festival. These include the Porsche 962 from 1987 and the 911 GT1 of 1998, which will be part of the line-up of a pit land display. Joining them will be a whole host of other iconic racers from Porsche’s past.
Porsche is the brand that has been most successful over the history of Le Mans, having had 16 outright wins. Additionally, the Porsche Museum is supporting the festival’s celebration of the endurance series by sending over some of the cars from its world-famous exhibition in Stuttgart.
It will not just be the Porsche cars that will be impressing crowds at the festival but also some motorsports celebrities. Leading the action on the track will be the former Porsche works race drivers and winners of Le Mans Derek Bell MBE and Richard Attwood.
Commenting on the event, general manager of marketing at Porsche Cars GB Ragnar Schulte said: “The commitment of Porsche Club GB and Brands Hatch to this Festival is impressive. The enthusiasm and passion for Porsche at this event will excite everyone who attends, whether or not you are a Club member, a Porsche owner or just someone who loves cars.”
The festival will also play host to the final round of a national contest that has been organised by Porsche Cars GB. A number of Porsche Centres were challenged to take part in a Classic Restoration project. This is the second year in a row when the competition has run.
As it is the 911 Turbo’s 40th birthday and the new 911 Targa has just been launched, this year the competition has challenged centres to restore any model that is either turbo-charged or a Targa. Included in this are front-engined turbo models, such as the 924 or the 944.
