The folks over at MINI have been excitedly revealing the new features of its latest Hatch model, which the manufacturer has been describing as a ‘contemporary evolution’ of the classic design.
Despite having all the hallmarks of a MINI, the new Hatch has been completely redesigned from the ground up, with designers heading back to the drawing board to alter every component to deliver the very best in function, performance and style.
The extensive work has resulted in the Hatch becoming the ‘New Original’ for MINI, offering more interior space and a more dynamic drive.
Furthermore, it comes with a technological debut under the bonnet, in the form of the ‘ground-breaking’ range of three-cylinder engines.
The latest MINI Hatch is available with three versions of powertrain, in the form of a three-cylinder 136hp petrol engine, a four-cylinder 192hp petrol engine, and a three-cylinder 116hp diesel engine. Each can be twinned to the six-speed manual transmission that comes as standard, or the optional six-speed automatic system.
While offering exceptional performance, MINI has been sure to keep an eye on CO2 emissions. When compared to the outgoing MINI Cooper D Automatic Hatch, the latest version delivers a 38 per cent reduction when it comes to the amount of CO2 produced.
It might not be entirely obvious to the naked-eye, but if you really wanted to get the tape measure out, you’d discover the body is 98mm longer than its predecessor, as well as 44mm wider and 7mm taller.
This has led to subtle changes to a number of features to accommodate this new bulk, including weight saving alterations to keep the car light and nimble.
However, it has retained traditional aesthetics such as the hexagonal contour of the radiator grille and the cheeky looking circular headlights.
This extended body has given all occupants a little bit more room to move, with additional space for their luggage. The rear seat can also be split or folded down completely for even more space.
It comes with a new interior display and instrument cluster on the steering column. Circular dials are now arranged vertically, displaying speed, revs and fuel levels.
MINI has also kept up with the changes in driver connectivity, incorporating its latest infotainment system.
The MINI Connected or MINI Connected XL additions allow users to operate the radio and navigation systems with ease, while also allowing smartphones to be integrated inside the car. This means occupants can access internet-based services and apps while on the road.
This technology extends to helping the driver, with the inclusion of anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, cornering brake control and a driving stability control system.
A rear view camera is incorporated to help those behind the wheel make the most of the parking assistant feature – a first for any new MINI.
The Driving Assistant option available with the model also offers impressive innovations, including a collision and pedestrian warning system with initial brake function, road sign detection and high-beam assistant.
