More power, exclusive styling and a quicker to-62mph sprint time earn the fastest ever E-Class super-saloon its £83,740 price tag…
If V8 super-saloons and uber-estates are your thing, anything from Mercedes of late with an AMG badge and four-doors has pretty much been the weapon of choice. Incredible V8 grunt – backed up by a thunderous soundtrack – rocket-like acceleration, and levels of rear-wheel-drifting-hoonery, that’s simply unmatched by the competition, have been the uniquely insane selling points of the recent Merc AMG cars. And now there’s this; the new Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S Model; the fastest E-Class – as a saloon or estate – ever to turn a large, low-profile-shod wheel on UK soil. The performance stats speak for themselves.
With a whopping 585bhp and 800Nm of torque – a useful 28bhp and 80Nm more thump than the clearly too sluggish standard E63 AMG – the S Model can hit 62mph in 4.1 seconds, a full 0.1 seconds faster than standard, and even in weightier estate trim, 62mph still comes and goes in a blinking 4.2 seconds. Top speed is generally limited to 155mph, but there are ways and means of removing this electronic spoilsport – getting the dealer to whip it off, basically.
Going green and protecting the bunnies is unlikely to be highest on the list of AMG drivers’ preferences, but this new mega Merc still manages to turn in some almost respectable pollution figures; testament to the AMG engineers’ attention to turning every last drop of fuel and air into the cleanest high-performance horsepower possible. The combined fuel consumption for the E63 AMG S Model saloon is 28.5mpg, with emissions at 232g/km of CO2, while the estate rocks up with more loading space and 28.3mpg; CO2 at 234g/km. These estate car economy stats mirror those of the standard big bodied E63 AMG.
This extra power and price (£83,740 for the saloon and £85,530 for the estate) is nothing without shouting about your performance and styling exclusivity. As such, the S Model gets some quietly showy details outside and some extra comfort inside. Outside we see a high-gloss black front lower bumper with a silver-shadow splitter, as well as side skirts and a rear trim strip with the silver-shadow inserts; plus an AMG rear spoiler in the body colour of choice; 19-inch multi-spoke AMG alloy wheels painted in titanium matt grey; red brake calipers, and the says-it-all ‘S’ badge on the boot lid. And if you see the badge you’ll hear that thumping engine too, through quad-exit exhaust tailpipes.
It’s the small details that count on the inside of the new S Model, with unique black nappa leather upholstery with grey contrast stitching; silver seat belts; an AMG badge on the front headrests; an electric rear roller blind for the saloon; AMG door sills with white LEDs, and an AMG instrument cluster with red touches and S Model badging. A stunning place from which to storm the autobahn indeed.
The hottest E-Class cars ever go on sale in the UK from the summer.
