Those who make it to the Paris Motor Show will get to take a look at the new Honda Civic Type R, which promises to be the most extreme and highest performing version of the model yet.

This hot-hatch, which is set to come to UK showrooms in 2015, is the gateway to a new performance era for the Honda brand.

It is powered by a 2.0 litre i-VTEC engine, which comes from Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology series. The car produces more than 280 PS and delivers unmatched performance over any Type R of the past. This includes all the past generations of the Civic and performance oriented versions of the Integra, Accord and NSX.

This new Type R is compliant with Euro 6 emissions regulations but does not see any compromise on power. The car has a turbocharger, that boosts low-end power delivery, which combines with the performance associated with Honda’s VTEC technology.

Speaking about the new Civic Type R, large project leader for the car at Honda Research and Development Suehiro Hasshi said: “Honda has had four Type R model derivatives – the Civic, Integra, Accord and NSX. The engine in this new Honda Civic Type R is unrivalled against all of them in terms of raw power, torque and engine response.”

As well as the engine, a number of engineering enhancements have been added to this type R to improve performance.

For example, at the side of the steering wheel is the new +R button, which enters the +R mode at a touch. It raises engine responsiveness and changes torque-mapping to a more aggressive and performance-focused setting. Steering also becomes more responsive and, coupled with the new four-point Adaptive Damper System, improves handling overall.

To explain the differences between the two modes, Mr Hasshi said the Civic Type R makes for a very agile everyday sports car in standard mode, while the +R button makes it more dynamic and athletic. Therefore, it could be a great car to switch between everyday use and track days.
