You can always count on the likes of Mercedes-Benz to try to get to the forefront of in-car technology and it seems that their new 4.0 litre V8 biturbo engine certainly looks like an achievement in that area.

V8 EngineThe eight-cylinder engine unit from AMG, the performance arm of Mercedes-Benz, has been engineered to bring about high levels of power delivery, excellent efficiency and good environmental compatibility all at once. It is also constructed from lightweight materials.

It has been designed for the new Mercedes-AMG GT car and delivers peak power of up to 510 horsepower and up to 650 Nm of torque, which adds up to make very impressive performance.

Indeed, V8 engines are often an integral part of the work that AMG does and this time Mercedes-AMG GmbH has taken the reins completely on both development and production.

Adding to Mr Moers’ point, head of engine and powertrain development at Mercedes-AMG Christian Enderle said: “The new AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo sees us presenting an exciting and powerful sports car engine which, thanks to a number of measures, also represents the next step in efficiency.”

It comes with two turbochargers that are located inside the V configuration, setting it apart from other V8s where these are mounted on the outside. This gives it the benefits of a compact engine design, optimum response and lower production of emissions.

Thanks to its dry sump lubrication, the engine can be installed lower to the ground. In turn, this means the centre of gravity is lower, which in turn means a car with this engine can enjoy faster acceleration.

What’s more, these changes make this engine the world’s first for use in a sports car that has both a hot inside V and dry sump acceleration.
