The SEAT Ibiza is set to hit a special milestone on Sunday (April 27th), with the car celebrating its 30th birthday.

It is the best-selling model in the Spanish brand’s history, so it’s no surprise SEAT is enthusiastically marking the event.

When it was first released in 1984, the Ibiza was intended to be sporty, young-spirited and driven by design. These ideals have stayed with the model throughout its life, culminating in the new 30th anniversary model that is set for release in June this year.

It was the first vehicle designed and developed as a whole by SEAT, becoming one of the most prized models the company delivers.

The first generation was active between 1984 and 1993 and was delivered in collaboration with Italdesign, the company of Giorgetto Giugiaro. It was to be the start of something special for the manufacturer.

Up next was the 1993-2002, taking all the hallmarks of the previous model, but offering much rounder lines. This helped to improve the car’s aerodynamics, while a new level of equipment was added to deal with the changes in modern driving.

In 2002, the third generation of the Ibiza was launched. Delivered under the guidance of Italian designer Walter de’Silva, this edition stepped up the manufacturing quality even further, tweaking the engine and dynamics to offer an even more responsive performance.

It started evolving into the shape we now see in the most modern version on the roads, exhibiting a sleek and smooth shape for optimum desirability and performance.

The 2008 model was created by Luc Donckerwolke, head of design at SEAT and formerly of Lamborghini. It presented the ‘Arrow Design’ concept, giving a much sportier distinction than any of the model’s predecessors.

In addition to being a champion of the road, it has also been an impressive performer on the track. The Ibiza Kit Car was a major success at the FIA 2.0-litre World Rally Championships in 1997 and 1998.

With the SEAT Ibiza now 30 years old, has the model now had its day?

Absolutely not.

We love this fantastic little hatchback and have been mightily impressed by how it has grown over the years.
