The concept of the next generation Honda FCV, a zero emissions fuel-cell vehicle, has been revealed at the 2015 Detroit Motor Show.
Concerns about how far an electric car can go might be allayed with the Honda FCV as this car has a range of 300 miles and is thought to have a refuelling time of only three minutes at a pressure of 70 MPa.
The fuel cell stack, which fits in under the bonnet, is 33 per cent smaller than that of the Honda FCX Clarity but also has a 60 per cent increase in power density.
In terms of design, the Honda FCV has a wide and aerodynamic body with a low ride. On the inside, the cabin is spacious and can seat five passengers. This was made possible because of new powertrain packaging efficiencies, which mean there is more space than there was in the four-seater FCX Clarity.
The Honda FCV concept made its first appearance to the world in Japan on November 17th 2014. After that, it was announced at the Los Angeles Auto Show that Honda would be providing FirstElement Fuel to the US and that hydrogen refuelling stations would be built throughout California to support alternatively fuelled vehicles.
This new car is meant to represent the next step in Honda’s ten-year history of leading and developing fuel-cell vehicles. It started with the original FCX that in July 2002 became the first EPA and CARB-certified fuel-cell vehicle. This FCX then became the first production fuel-cell vehicle in the world when it was introduced to Japan and the US in December of the same year.
It went on to prove that it could handle adverse conditions when the FCX became the first fuel-cell vehicle that was able to start up and work in temperatures below 0 degrees C.
The Honda FCV is set to be launched in Japan in March 2016 before heading to the US and Europe.
