Dave Pericak, global director at Ford Performance, explained the company has promised a “serious driving machine”.

He added: “The stunning pace and innovative technology of the all-new Focus RS place it head-to-head with performance models from luxury and exotic marques, and it’s ready for the challenge.”

The Ford RS will make use of the new Ford Performance All-Wheel Drive with Dynamic Torque Vectoring. It is designed to offer significant driver enjoyment that balances traction and grip with high cornering speeds and agility.

It will also be fitted with selectable Drive Modes, including a special drift mode that allows the driver to control oversteer drifts.

Under the bonnet, the RS will have a new 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine, which has a lot in common with the engine in Ford’s new Mustang. Overall, the upgrades mean the Focus RS will be capable of providing ten per cent more power.

Ford has also focused on engine cooling, with designers making room for a larger radiator pack to cope with high-performance track driving.

“This very special 2.3-litre EcoBoost unit will inspire drivers as they feel the surge of the turbo, and reward them as they take it to the red line – all delivered with a visceral sound guaranteed to put a smile on your face,” explained Mr Pericak.

It is expected the Focus RS will be on sale in Europe from the beginning of 2016.
