A new Chevrolet has taken to the ice in Russia as part of an amazing photoshoot to promote the latest offering from the American manufacturer. It was captured on the thick ice that has formed over Lake Baikal, with the photographers using a simple yet extremely effective technique to give the snaps a mystical and stunning quality. By using an underwater light, photographers Dmitriy Christoprudov and Nikolay Kykov were able to illuminate the ice, emphasising the cracks and breaks in the surface and making the water underneath glow like something from science-fiction. The end result is a spectacular and super cool set of images which really gives the car an otherworldly feel. Speaking on their personal blog, the cameramen said: “We didn’t know if we would be able to illuminate the car through the one meter (3 feet) thick ice. However we decided to give it a try…” And try they did, calling on local fishermen to help them try and penetrate through the frozen barrier to get the lighting equipment into place. “To make a hole, we borrowed an ice drill in the village, however the diameter of the hole was too small to let our light come through, so we had to stop fishermen on the roadway and offer them 500 roubles for widening our hole with their special tool,” they continued “[The] next problem we bumped into is that after digging a hole we got a lot of ice debris around and also the ice was scratched by the fishermen’s spiked boots. We spent an hour cleaning up the surface.” However, despite all the struggles and hard work, the photographers finally made it through and got the pictures they needed. It was certainly worth it in the end. Lake Baikal is believed to be one of the oldest lakes in the world, dating back over 25 million years. It also has the largest volume of water for any freshwater lake on the planet and contains around 20 per cent of the planet’s unfrozen surface fresh water. With depths of 5,387 ft, it is also one of the deepest. The subject car is the new Chevrolet Cruze, a model heading to this year’s New York Auto Show. It is one of the brand’s best-selling cars worldwide so, naturally, Chevy hasn’t made any major changes to it for its 2014 release. The grille has been given a new angular shape, linking it even closer to its bigger brother the Malibu. If customers take advantage of the LT and LTZ trims, they will benefit from daytime LED running lights. However, it is the infotainment system that comes with the biggest alteration. It allows the driver to connect their mobile phone, to alert them when they receive text messages. These are then read out loud by the vehicle over Bluetooth. Customers with iPhone iOS 6 and 7 will also benefit from the Siri Eyes Free voice control function for even more connectivity on the move. The integration of a seven-inch touchscreen display allows users to access specific features of the machine by simply stroking its surface. Under the bonnet is a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine as standard, capable of offering up to 46 mpg. Images courtesy of: www.dailymail.co.uk
