The Range Rover is universally respected as the ultimate go-anywhere vehicle. There are few places on earth it can’t reach and this refusal to be told ‘no’ by any road surface is what forms the basis for the new Discovery SVX.
Billed as the most extreme Land Rover yet, this ultimate all-terrain Land Rover Discovery is powered by a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol engine, pumping out 517bhp and up to 625Nm of torque.
It incorporates an increased ground clearance, body and suspension lifts, more wheel articulation and large all-terrain tyres to recreate the Range Rover’s seemingly boundless ability.
In a first for the new Discovery, it uses a specially tuned Terrain Response 2 system and Active Roll Control to improve body control and enhance off-road traction.
The Discovery SVX will also be the first Land Rover assembled by hand at the SVO (Special Vehicle Operations) Technical Centre when production begins in 2018 and the first modern Land Rover to wear the SVX badge.
No area has been neglected in readying the Discovery SVX for tough terrain with the tyres – 815mm diameter 275/55 R20 Goodyear Wranglers – coming with higher side-walls to reduce contact pressure and improve performance on soft surfaces. These tyres also have a more aggressive tread pattern to improve grip in muddy conditions.
Stylistically, the SVX sets itself apart from other Discovery models with unique bumpers and an exclusive satin tectonic grey paint finish while inside, the cabin combines lunar and light oyster shades with ‘rush orange’ accent and ‘X’ logos on the SVX-branded seats.
John Edwards, managing director of Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations arm, said: “SVO designers are embedded within the Land Rover team and have worked with our engineers to unleash their own passion for adventure to create another truly desirable and versatile vehicle in the Land Rover line-up.”
A production preview of the Discovery SVX went on show at the Frankfurt Motor Show early September, so expect to see a showroom-ready car in the next few months.
