Remember the early 2000s when life was simpler?
When we were all laughing about how the millennium bug was threatening to trigger the demise of all mankind? When MySpace was the best thing on the internet? When Nelly was getting ‘hot in herre’ and Eminem was urging us to ‘lose yourself’? When Thierry Henry was saying ‘va va voom’ on the telly?
Well, that last thing is making a comeback after the legendary French striker penned a new deal to be Renault’s brand ambassador. For the first time since 2011, va va voom is returning to UK TV screens. The new series of TV idents will be broadcast on Sky Sports during or around 96 live matches throughout the 2018/19 Premier League season. Renault and Henry – France’s all-time leading international goal scorer – share a history that dates back to 2002, when the then-Arsenal player signed for Renault to create the fan-favourite series of ‘va va voom’ adverts.
The adverts certainly left a lasting impact on the British public because in 2004, the phrase ‘va va voom’ found its way into the Concise Oxford English Dictionary and the adverts regularly feature in ‘best car adverts’ lists. Henry, who scored 228 goals in 376 appearances for Arsenal, said: “It feels great to reignite my long-stating ‘liaison’ with Renault, especially as I’m returning to the team during its first journey into football.
“Having played in stadiums across the world, I know first-hand the passion fans have for both life and their favourite sport. I’m looking forward to helping Renault publicly celebrate this passion over the course of the Premier League season, while injecting some ‘va va voom’ back into British football.”
Keep an eye out for the ads when the 2018/19 Premier League season kicks off this weekend.
