Introducing the 2024 BMW M5 Tourer
Last Christmas, BMW presented us with a shapely hint of the new 2024 BMW M5 Tourer, wrapped in Nordic Christmas wrapping, boasting a nose-forward profile that begs to be seen comfortably cruising on a motorway somewhere in the world.
A Festive BMW Disguise
As far as disguising a new car goes, BMW hit the mark with this Christmas present for fans of their touring models, showcased among Bavarian Christmas trees in a red and gold wrap with a giant gold bow sitting atop the bonnet.
A Return to Long-Distance Touring
The 2024 BMW M5 Tourer marks the return of the long-distance touring variant to the M series, a segment last seen in 2007.
Undergoing Global Testing
BMW states that the M series has entered a practical phase within its development, with this new high-performance model currently undergoing testing across various parts of the world on public roads and racetracks, including Nurburgring, ahead of its release this year.
A Leap in Evolution
The new BMW M5 Tourer is expected to incorporate a brand new partially electrified hybrid drive system, reflecting BMW’s steady progression towards full electrification.
Excitingly, this hybrid system may likely come from the XM SUV, potentially giving the M5 Touring a turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 with an electric motor offering up 194bhp, resulting in a total output of 644bhp and powering all four wheels.
Pushing Performance Boundaries
Last year, BMW introduced the bespoke Label Red XM, boasting an impressive 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds along with 738bhp, hinting at the performance potential of the M5 Tourer.
Design and Interior Innovations
The M5 Touring will feature a similar grille to the standard 5 series models and will also incorporate a roof spoiler at the rear.
BMW plans to revitalize the interior to highlight the new model, with iDrive 8 featuring 5G connectivity and an Augmented Reality sat nav system.
This system, working with BMW’s Operating System 8, will offer on-screen arrow indicators for useful information such as parking areas and car parks, among other features, likely on a 14.9-inch touchscreen.
Towards Electrification
The XM is capable of just over 50 miles on electrical power alone, signaling a smooth transition towards fully electric models in the future.
Release and Pricing
BMW has yet to indicate which quarter the M5 Touring will be released, although there is speculation that it might arrive in time for summer. Pricing details are also awaited, but considering the Label Red’s price of around £171,000, it could become the manufacturer’s most expensive production automobile yet.
