BMW’s M5 burst onto UK roads earlier this year by setting a world record-setting 232.5-mile drift and the sports saloon is now getting a tasty upgrade with the unveiling of the M5 Competition.

While the standard sixth-gen M5’s 4.4-litre V8 engine churns out 591bhp, this seared version exploits the same unit to produce 615bhp and snip the 0-62mph sprint by a tenth of a second to 3.3 seconds.

It even has enough horsepower to blast off to 124mph in 10.8 seconds – a third of a second quicker than the boggo M5.

Aside from the power upgrade, the M5 Competition’s handling has been sharpened, while exterior tweaks denote its ‘imposing levels of thrust’ (BMW’s words, not ours).

Compared to the regular M5, this hotter version is 7mm lower while the car’s suspension is said to be ten per cent striffer. The springs and dampers have also been altered and the car should be more stable at high speed due to the increased camber up front. Finally, a rear anti-roll bar promises to make the M5 Competition feel more rigid and responsive.

The engine is linked to the same eight-speed M Steptronic auto gearbox as the regular M5. As with the M2 Competition we told you about recently, this upgraded M5 gets some glossy visual extras, such as a shiny black double-kidney grill, body-colour door handles, sports exhaust with black tailpipes and high-gloss black rear apron.

Inside, you’ll find M seat belts and full leather ‘Merino Aragon’ upholstery on the seats and parts of the dashboard.

Prices haven’t been confirmed yet, but the conventional M5 costs upwards of £90,000 so plonk an extra few grand on that and you won’t be far out.
