The newest supercar from BMW, the i8, has been dubbed as the ‘future of the supercar’ by its creators. But what is it about the car that makes it worthy of this title?

It turned heads at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show, where it was able to show off a wealth of technologies that make it the most advanced supercar to have been manufactured so far.

The BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid performance vehicle that has a 1.5 litre three cylinder turbocharged petrol engine behind it as well as an electric motor, which combine to provide fantastic acceleration.

What’s more, the car has taken the Efficient Dynamics philosophy of BMW to new heights as it provides excellent fuel economy at 135 mpg while emissions are also kept to a low at a mere 49 g/km.

This efficiency is further optimised in the car’s design, which combines this trait with the style that is synonymous with BMW.

The sports car-like dynamics of the vehicle are also well demonstrated with its long bonnet, aerodynamic aids that are clearly visible, stretched roofline, short overhangs and long wheelbase at 2,800 mm. It also has a wide track with the front axle measuring at 1,644 mm while the back one is 1,715 mm.

Drivers looking to purchase an i8 get to choose between four colours, three of which have been designed exclusively for BMW i models. These contrast beautifully with the black belt and, depending on the colour chosen, drivers will get the accents of the vehicle painted in either BMW i blue or frozen grey.
