Happy birthday, BMW 7 Series.

That’s right, the super high-end saloon has hit the big four-oh, and for the past four decades, few cars have signified luxury, technological innovation, comfort and an invigorating drive quite as much as BMW’s 7.

In addition to the usual cake-and-party-poppers antics that BMW execs are undoubtedly indulging in right now, the Bavarian car maker has wheeled out a special edition 7 Series.

The 7 Series Edition 40 Jahre will be unveiled properly at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, before going on sale the month after, and we’ve got the first pictures here.

Just like with the regular 7 Series, the car will be available with a regular or long wheelbase body, with engines boasting six, eight or 12 cylinders.

Stylistically, each of the 200 Edition 40 Jahre 7 Series models will boast an exclusive interior and exterior, built to the individual customer’s specification.

From the road, the car is recognisable by the inclusion of the M Aerodynamics Package and 20-inch BMW Individual light alloy wheels in a V spoke design and the edition signet designed exclusively for the anniversary model, located on the B pillar coverings and door sills.

As with the 30 Jahre M3 and M5, the car will be offered in two exclusive body colours: frozen silver metallic and the elegant petrol mica metallic.

Inside, the 7 Series’ swanky cabin is achieved with the full leather-trim Merino fine grain with handwoven piping in smoke white and Alcantara smoke white roof liner.

There are comfort seats for all occupants, while interior trim strips are offered either in a piano black lacquer finish or in the high-grade wood finish Eucalyptus straight-grained smoke brown high gloss, depending on the upholstery colour.

The edition signet pops up again on the two smoke white comfort cushions, headrests and floor mats.

How much will it cost you? That’s unclear right now.

Prices for the regular 7 Series start from £61,300 for the 725d and stretch right up to £132,560 for the long M760Li xDrive V12.

We’ll find out for sure when the car is shown off in the metal later this year.
