Same breathtaking design, new customisable roof

Executive Vice President & Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman describes the design as “beautiful yet brutish” and we couldn’t have said it better. Somehow the smooth lines and curves look as soft as silk, but at the same time, the sharp contours and angular corners bring a more aggressive aesthetic to the convertible grand tourer. The car is virtually the same as the non-convertible DBS Superleggera with one key difference, the fabric roof.

Unlike ordinary fabric car roofs, this one is available in eight colours including Bordeaux Red, Atlantic Blue and Titan Grey. Furthermore, the inside of the roof can be customised with a choice of six headliner colours. The fabric hood has been tested to the extremes, in conditions similar to the smouldering heat of Death Valley to the chill of the Arctic Circle and can withstand these temperatures thanks to eight layers of durable insulation materials. The roof has also been run through 100,000 cycles to test that the mechanism will withstand the test of regular usage.

Great standard spec and plenty of extras to choose from

When it comes to buying a DBS Superleggera Volante, there’s no such thing as a no-frills spec, obviously. Without any extras, this convertible supercar comes with 21” ten twin spoke wheels, embroidered DBS logos on the seats, dark chrome interior ‘jewellery’, 2×2 carbon fibre gloss exterior body pack and many other cool things such as matte black finishers on the exhaust tips and dark anodised brake callipers.

As for extras, the DBS Superleggera Volante is very customisable. As found in other Astons, you can choose from between Caithness or Balmoral leather to be used throughout the interior and can be in the pattern of your choice. Choose from placed or Geode perforation or Triaxial or Geode quilting.

If you buy a DBS Superleggera Volante then you can choose whether the A-pillar is Alcantara or leather, you can have colour keyed boot carpet, you can have a carbon fibre steering wheel, you can choose between three interior jewellery options, five seat belt colour options, three trim inlay options and four seat back veneer options.

A top speed of 211mph, 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds, producing 715bhp

Not only does the DBS Superleggera Volante have breathtaking beauty, it’s also packing some serious power under the bonnet. Powered by a 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 which delivers a whopping 715bhp at 6,500rpm. The car also produces 900Nm of torque at 1,800-5,000rpm. It takes just 3.6 seconds to go from 0-62mph and only 0-100mph can be achieved in just 6.7 seconds.

Fuel economy isn’t too bad either at a combined rating of 20.1 mpg, probably thanks to the ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. Innovative and bespoke adaptive software reads the conditions the car is operating in, as well as the driver’s demands, to ensure the car is in exactly the right gear at the right time.

Furthermore, the car features 3 driving modes and a Quiet Start mode for when you want to drive away discreetly. GT mode is for calm and ‘normal’ driving, whereas Sport offers a more riveting drive with a much louder exhaust note and Sport Plus makes the car’s acoustics and driving feel even more extreme.

What does “DBS Superleggera Volante” mean?

For those unfamiliar with Aston Martin and how they name their cars, “DBS Superleggera Volante” may be interpreted as nothing more than gibberish. However, each part of the name has a story to tell.

Aston Martin’s “DBS” line of cars have always been grand tourers, or GTs, which means that they’re built to be luxurious, fast and comfortable. A grand tourer should make a cross-country trip feel like a joy by offering engaging performance and great comfort. DB stands for David Brown, the English businessman who bought Aston Martin in 1947.

The name “Superleggera” represents a collaboration between Aston Martin and Italian car body-maker, Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera. They’re known for their patented Superleggera, which translates to “super light”, bodies which can be found on various Aston Martins, Alfa Romeos, Ferraris and a few other manufacturers.

Lastly, “Volante” is simply the name given to Aston Martin’s convertible models, similar to Spyder. The word “Volante” is an adjective, meaning “moving with light rapidity” and is used as a direction in music. The word is derived from the Latin word volant, meaning to fly.
