The Dodge Challenger is one of those cars that holds plenty of significance within the North American automotive canon yet somehow never managed to cross the pond into the UK market. At least not officially anyway, but that isn’t going to stop us from appreciating this eye-popping collaboration.
To celebrate 80 years of the Dodge Challenger, Mopar has worked its magic on the iconic muscle car, creating a handful of special edition models with fancy hand-painted, custom, show car trim options.
Only 80 Mopar ‘17 Dodge Challengers will be available in pitch black and contusion blue, with another 80 boasting a pitch black and billet silver paint job.
Each comes with Mopar performance parts, accessories, an exclusive owner’s kit and a unique numbered plaque.
Under the ‘hood’ is a 6.4-litre 392 HEMI engine, pumping out 478bhp and up to 644Nm of torque. This is the same engine that sits in the model below the range-topping 697bhp SRT Hellcat. Linked to a six-speed manual gearbox, this particular Challenger can get up to 60mph in 4.4 seconds.
Stylistically, the engine is augmented by Mopar’s shaker hood package, which provides performance gains with a hint of vintage styling. The scoop is embellished with shaker badging. A Mopar cold air intake also delivers a performance boost and is aided by an air catcher duct system via the headlamp.
The upgrade – inspired by that flagship SRT Hellcat Challenger we just mentioned – feeds additional cold air into the vehicle. Mopar Shaker strut tower braces and caps are silver powder-coated and increase rigidity and handling of the Mopar ’17 Dodge Challenger. Meanwhile, four-piston Brembo brakes provide stopping power.
Aside from the exclusive paint job, the exterior of Mopar’s Challenger is finished by 20-inch aluminum wheels, embellished with semi-gloss accents and center caps carrying the Dodge logo. The standard chrome exhaust tips are replaced with black exhaust tips from the SRT Hellcat.
Inside, the performance seats are customised with Tungsten Mopar logos embroidered on the seatbacks. There’s also Tungsten stitching bordering the seats and throughout the vehicle, touching the door panels and additional interior areas.
UK customers can only dream though; the limited-edition vehicle will only be available in the U.S. and Canada, retailing at $55,790 (£44,777) before taxes and destination fees. It arrives in select dealerships from April 2017.
