American tuner Hennessey Performance has unveiled its latest creation: a heavily modified 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 that goes by the name of The Exorcist.
The dramatic name makes more sense once you realise that the car is Hennessey’s answer to the 828bhp Dodge Challenger Demon, and with 1,000bhp at 6,400 rpm, it certainly packs enough wallop to cast out most rivals.
Fitted with rear drag radial tyres, The Exorcist can reach 60mph from rest in under three seconds, while covering the quarter-mile in less than 10 seconds.
Hennessey company founder and president John Hennessey said the car was more than just a mindless racer though.
“It’s a well-rounded super muscle car that is just as happy on a road course as it is on the dragstrip and street,” he commented.
“Needless to say, this will leave the competition’s heads spinning.” If ever there was a joke begging to be cracked, that was it…
The car is driven by the same 641bhp V8 block from the standard Camaro ZL1 but power is ramped up significantly, thanks to the addition of a larger supercharger and intercooler system, new camshafts, cylinder heads, a better induction system and engine management remapping.
On top of its four-figure power output, the Exorcist creates 1,310Nm of torque, up from 881Nm in the already potent Camaro. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or a ten-speed automatic gearbox.
Only 100 units will be produced per model year, with prices starting at $55,000 in its native US. That works out at £42,839 in pre-Brexit currency but that doesn’t include the price of the £50k Camaro base car, nor the cost of getting it over here.
The Exorcist received a world unveiling at the Houston Auto Show on April 5th.
