Two of motoring’s most iconic titans have combined for a special edition car that has just been revealed at the Detroit Auto Show.
This October marks 50 years since Bullitt starring Steve McQueen burst onto cinema screens around the world, and to celebrate this humongous moment in the car world, Ford has thrown together the Mustang Bullitt.
Due this summer, the new Ford Mustang Bullitt is powered by an upgraded 5.0-litre V8 engine producing at least 474bhp and 569Nm of torque, pushing the new Bullitt to a top speed of 163mph.
The gear shifter on the manual-only Mustang Bullitt is topped with a white cue ball shift knob as a nod to the original, while an active valve performance exhaust system has been retuned to give the car a signature burble.
One feature most certainly not included in the original car is the 12-inch all-digital LCD instrument cluster that sits at the heart of the Mustang’s interior.
It’s the same system that’ll feature in the all-new Mustang that goes on sale across Europe later this year, but it includes a unique Bullitt welcome screen that starts in green with an image of the car rather than the pony.
“This new Bullitt is, as Steve McQueen was, effortlessly cool,” said Darrell Behmer, chief designer for the Mustang.
“As a designer, it’s my favourite Mustang – devoid of stripes, spoilers and badges. It doesn’t need to scream about anything; it’s just cool.”
He’s not wrong. Coming with shadow black or the classic dark highland green paint jobs, as seen in the movie, the car also pays tribute to McQueen’s car with subtle chrome accents around the grille and front windows, as well as classic torque thrust 19-inch aluminium wheels.
Inside and out, badges and emblems are kept to a minimum, with only the circular faux fuel-filler cap Bullitt logo on the rear centre visible from the exterior.
The sad news is this special edition Mustang will only be available in the US, but you could always make arrangements to get it shipped over.
