Popular culture has helped to make American models more popular among classic car buyers in recent years.

This is according to auction house Historics at Brooklands and Classic American magazine, which said the profile of cult US vehicles is growing as their value appreciates.

Ben Klemenzson, editor of the magazine, said much of the “snobbery” once shown by motoring experts towards American classics no longer exists.

He added: “Cars like the Mustang, Corvette and most Mopars have more than doubled in value over the last decade.”

Historics at Brooklands auction director Edward Bridger-Stille said he believes films and TV series should be credited with helping to boost the profile of classic American models.

“Our white glove sale of all 56 vehicles offered from the big screen blockbuster Captain America, back in our March 2011 sale, demonstrates how film and television has pushed these cars into the public conscience,” he commented.

Several classic US cars are due to feature in the Historics at Brooklands auction on September 1st.

The catalogue will include a 1967 Pontiac Catalina ‘Wide Track’ Convertible and a 1958 Buick Limited Riviera Sedan, with the former expected to attract bids of between £29,000 and £35,000.

Imported to the UK from Texas in 2011, the rare Pontiac has been restored to a high standard over the last ten years and comes with recently added custom alloy wheels.

The Buick Limited Riviera Sedan features every available extra from the time, including electric power windows, servo assisted brakes, power steering and electric antenna.

It is completely original and has never been restored, giving classic car lovers a change to own a rare piece of American motoring history in its original form.
