This all-electric super SUV has 7 motors and more horsepower than the Ford GT

The Ford Mustang Mach-E divided opinions. Not only did it take the Mustang name and slap it on an SUV but that SUV also happened to be electric. You couldn’t get further from the original connotation of the legendary Mustang name, a name that is associated with the world’s most famous series of muscle car dating back to the 60s.

Well, power-thirsty muscle car enthusiasts may be appeased a little bit more knowing that Ford has made a one-off Mach-E with enough horsepower to shred a set of tyres quicker than you can say ‘yee-haw’.

With a whopping 1,400 bhp and 7 electric motors, the ‘Mustang Mach-E 1400’ has over twice the horsepower of a Ford GT and a Ford GT’s-worth more horsepower than the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500.

Sure, horsepower is all well and good but without traction, it’s all good for nothing, which is why the Mustang Mach-E 1400 also produces more than 1,000 kg of downforce at 160mph. The car was not built to race in any particular series and therefore, it does not adhere to any rules, giving Ford total freedom to make the most bonkers super SUV possible.

The Mach-E 1400 is the result of a collaboration between Ford Performance and RTR (a tuning company previously responsible for some equally-insane Mustangs) spanning over 10,000 hours. Rather than being built to race, this one-off monster was built as a bit of a PR stunt, with Ford aiming to subvert the public’s expectations when it comes to electric cars, showing us all that electric cars can be tuned to bonkers power levels too!

Unlike any other electric car, this one also has 7 electric motors, which is 5 more than what’s found on the production Mach-E GT. Three at the front, four at the back, all to help deliver the absurd amount of power to the wheels.

Mark Rushbrook, motorsports director at Ford Performance admitted it was hard to deliver such levels of power:

“The challenge was controlling the extreme levels of power provided by the seven motors… Mustang Mach-E 1400 is a showcase of the art of the possible with an electric vehicle.”

The chassis and powertrain are highly adjustable, allowing the team to change the car’s set up for drag racing, drifting, circuit racing and so on. Delivery can be configured to FWD, RWD or AWD and steering can be adjusted to allow for extreme angles – very useful for drifting.

As well as an excellent bit of marketing for electric cars, the Mach-E 1400 also serves as a testbed for new materials that Ford are engineering, such as the organic composite fibres that the bonnet is made from.

The most overzealous electric SUV is set to debut at a NASCAR race ‘soon’ and with Ford investing over $11.5 billion in electric vehicles, we could even get a Ford electric supercar sometime in the future.
