Most of us drive everyday but may not be aware of the growing number of rules that are there to keep us all safe on the road.

Whilst many actions are clearly against the law, some are perhaps not so obvious or as strongly enforced.

Check out the 5 most common driving offences that drivers commit.

Speeding

Whether you drive a little or a lot over the speed limit, you are still going to get yourself into trouble.

Speeding drivers can face anything from points on their license, to a fine or even a driving ban.

The UK is dotted all over with speed cameras, well over 5000, but speeding is still rife in this country.

Driving Whilst Distracted

Most of us are glued to our mobiles, but when you are in charge of a vehicle, do not even think about picking it up to send or check messages.

A crash is four times as likely to happen if you use a phone while driving, yet more than 500,000 of us still refuse to follow this simple rule and accidents caused by this distraction are on the rise.

Driving Under The Influence

Driving under the influence of drink, or drugs, is a serious matter as there are more than 3000 drink driving related traffic accidents every year in the UK.

If you are found to have over 80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood while driving in the UK, you will join the other 100,000 drivers a year who fail the police roadside test.

Careless Or Dangerous Driving

This is a statutory offence that could range from driving aggressively to allowing your passengers to distract you.

A surprisingly high number of motorists do not realise that tailgating and improper overtaking are both chargeable offences.

Driving Without Insurance

Police ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras are designed to catch uninsured vehicles driving on public roads.

Insurance is there to protect and cover people and vehicles, but millions of drivers are not properly insured, often on purpose to save money.

This is one of the most serious offences and often leads to driving bans and vehicle seizures by the police.
