Volkswagen has recently unveiled the face-lifted version of its popular ID.3 model, which inaugurated the automaker’s ID family of electric vehicles (EVs) two and a half years ago. Although VW refers to it as the second generation, it is a mild facelift even by the brand’s conservative standards.
Despite the subtle changes in the exterior and interior, the 2024 Volkswagen ID.3 boasts comprehensive upgrades, including the latest software and new convenience and assistance systems. The exterior updates are hardly noticeable, but they give the vehicle a more striking look, thanks to the more aggressive front bumper with enlarged air cooling openings, new light signatures for the LED headlights and taillight clusters, new aero-optimised alloy wheels, and new colours.
The face-lifted ID.3’s interior is similar to the current model, but Volkswagen implemented several suggestions from customers. Improvements in the haptic experience were made through the use of better material quality, including soft, foam-backed surfaces in the cockpit. The door panels were also remodelled to feature softer and larger surfaces with more generous hand rests.
The ID.3 is now entirely animal-free, with a high proportion of recycled materials, such as the Art-velours Eco microfibre material used on the door trims and seat covers, which is made of 71% recycled plastic waste. The vehicle still features two free-standing displays, including a compact 5.3-inch driver display and a larger 12-inch touchscreen.
The infotainment system now features several changes in the menu structure, such as a clearer and more informative charging menu located on the top level of the main display. The smart Electric Vehicle Route Planner has been updated and improved to schedule charging stops for longer journeys so that the destination can be reached as quickly as possible, using current traffic information and forecasts in addition to the battery charge level.
The ID.3 retains the same rear-mounted electric drive motor rated at 150 kW and 310 Nm of torque, as well as the 58-kWh and 77-kWh battery packs with the same WLTP range ratings. The larger battery enables a range of up to 546 kilometres in the ID.3 Pro S, while the smaller one offers 426 km of range in the ID.3 Pro. Volkswagen plans to introduce a smaller battery in the future but hasn’t provided details.
In summary, the 2024 Volkswagen ID.3 facelift brings updates both inside and out, and VW claims it is a second generation with comprehensive upgrades, including new convenience and assistance systems. The exterior changes are subtle, but they give the vehicle a more striking look, while the interior features improved material quality and a more haptic experience. The smart Electric Vehicle Route Planner has been updated, and the ID.3 still features the same rear-mounted electric drive motor and battery options with the same WLTP range ratings. Customers in Europe can expect the face-lifted ID.3 to start shipping in the fourth quarter of 2023.
