After months of teasing, Honda will finally be removing the veil and debuting the brand new, long anticipated Civic Type R on July 21st 2022. This date marks 50 years since the first-generation Honda Civic went on sale, as well as the 25 year anniversary of the Type R. With electrification swiftly taking over, this model will certainly be the last high-revving Type R we’re introduced to, making it another moment in history for Honda and the automotive realm… but what can we expect when all is revealed?
Despite our excitement, there is plenty of information that remains a mystery until the official reveal, but the most recent teasers give us a little glimpse of what to expect. We can see it will be keeping the traditional red Type R badging, with a bespoke honeycomb grille and a more aggressive air intake arrangement.
The new Type R will remain front-wheel-drive, confirmed by Honda as it set a FWD track record at Suzuka in April. The previous record-holder was in fact held by the current Civic Type R GT Limited Edition, but the upcoming model scraped this by barely even a second, rounding the 3.6km circuit in 2 minutes 23.120 seconds (just 0.873 seconds faster)… So despite rumors of a wild 400-bhp monster, this would actually suggest we can’t expect any massive power jumps.
The spoiler features a new raised mounting, while the smaller spoiler lip on the boot lid no longer appears to dissect the rear window. Further visible changes to the body include lower shoulder, bonnet line and headlights, taking a slight step back from the more futuristic style and more towards an emanation of the eighth-generation Civic. The interior is expected to follow suit too, with a free standing central touchscreen mounted on a minimalist dashboard.
As for the colours that will be available, according to a leak on twitter that has since been deleted, the official names are: Championship White, Rallye Red, Sonic Grey Pearl, Crystal Black Pearl, and Boost Blue Pearl. Regardless of exterior, all new Type R’s will have the same interior dressed in the classic black and red… But until the official launch next week, we can’t be absolutely sure these are legit.
Honda has gone as far to reveal that this will be “the most powerful Civic ever”, leaving official performance figures and unconfirmed details for next week’s big reveal… Can it come any sooner?!
