VW has a certain legacy to live up to when it comes to campervans because as we know, VW had the campervan, known the world over for its iconic looks and excellent practicality and affordability.
Their new, upcoming Mini-camper has been teased in a recent release of some concept images which are actually, rather pretty. The images show a couple tying two kayaks to the roof, a parked mini-camper with an L-shaped tent connected to the back of it and a man enjoying a book in the back of his mini-camper at the beach.
From this, along with their press release, we have found out several interesting things about the upcoming mini-camper that the avid outdoor enthusiasts will want to know all about!
The new mini-camper will be based on the all-new fifth-generation Caddy (as seen here in a clay-like orange colour) which won’t be released until early 2021. However, unlike the new upcoming Caddy, the mini-camper version will have several camping-specific features.
One new feature is a new bed concept, which is said to have greater versatility and will be almost 2 metres long, comfortably sleeping people who are 6ft and above. The bed will have disc spring elements and will be removable, allowing owners to take full advantage of the huge boot.
Also available will be the camping chairs and table from the California models. Cleverly, when stored, they will also double up as a privacy screen inside the vehicle as they fasten to the rear window section of the van.
To make a great camper, though, occupants should be able to gaze at the stars once the sun goes down and of course, the new mini-camper caters to that exact vision. A sizeable panoramic glass roof will sit above the rear section of the van, measuring in at 1.4 m3. Of course, waking up in the morning with the sun burning through said roof window doesn’t sound quite as fun, which is why all of the windows can be darkened to stop that from happening!
Lastly, one last detail that VW have drip-fed us is that this all-new mini-camper, based on next year’s Caddy, will feature a whopping 19 assistance systems making driving safer and easier. VW’s ‘Travel Assist’ is confirmed to make up part of the 19 assistance systems that will be in the camper van, featuring functions like lane assist, adaptive cruise control and automatic sign reading.
Another confirmed assisting feature is Trailer Assist, something already found on the current T series and Crafter vans. This system aids with reverse manoeuvring with a trailer and also includes VW’s Side-Assist and Rear Traffic Alert.
Although we haven’t got all the details yet, the VW mini-camper is shaping up to be quite the capable camper. Although it certainly doesn’t have the simplicity, could it offer the same outdoors adventure as the iconic VW campervan?
