We recently told you about Volkswagen’s forthcoming SUV – the T-ROC – and exactly seven days on, we’ve got another VW to tell you about.
This time, we’re focusing on the fancy sounding Arteon – a luxurious five-door, five-seat fastback flagship that will sit pretty at the top of the VW range when it goes on sale this September.
VW describes the Arteon as an avant-garde gran turismo with svelte fastback styling that combines sports car detailing with luxury motoring in a muscular yet elegant design.
‘Fastback’ isn’t a term we hear much these days, although there are plenty of them about – the Kia Stinger, Ford Mustang and the new Honda Civic – and as the side profile shot would attest, think of it as a saloon and a coupe roofline.
From launch, the engine range will comprise a trio of two-litre engines: a 276bhp petrol and two diesels with 148bhp and 236bhp. It’s the latter of the three that will be the performance choice, due to its ability to dart from 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds. The 147bhp 1.5-litre petrol unit, which debuted in the refreshed Golf and can rest cylinders when they’re not needed, will eventually join the range too.
Luxury is provided with the inclusion of plush Nappa leather upholstery, a three-zone electronic air conditioning, a head-up display, panoramic roof, front massaging seats, heated steering wheel and alloy wheels up to 20 inches.
The Arteon’s premium feel is bolstered by its raft of tech, which includes a 12.3-inch active info display, VW’s latest Discover Navigation system with eight-inch colour touchscreen, an eight-speaker sound system, and Bluetooth audio with telephone connectivity. There’s also the Volkswagen Media Control, which allows remote control of the infotainment system via a compatible smartphone or tablet device.
Equipment is split over two lofty trims – the luxurious Elegance and sport-minded R-Line – with prices starting from £34,305 and topping out at £39,955 before extras.
The first Arteon models will meet their British owners some time in September.
