Stellantis Plans Car Recycling: Your Old Motor Gets a Bin Day

Stellantis & Galloo announce recycling scheme for ol cars

With the pressures of climate change increasing, and the need for a more sustainable future grows more necessary than ever, the vehicle industry of course faces its own challenges when it comes to the disposal of old cars.

We’re all familiar with putting out the recycling bins on designated days, but what if you had the option of leaving your car out alongside your used cereal boxes and jam jars?

Stellantis is considering a car recycling initiative that aims to collect old vehicles and strip them for reusable parts or recycle them into new vehicles.

Imagine the possibilities. Just like the innovative Audi project and eBay’s spares plant, Stellantis envisions a future where your old motor is picked up and given a second life. With an extensive portfolio spanning a wide range of well-known brands, Stellantis is committed to revolutionizing car recycling.

New Vehicles From Scrapped Cars?

Naturally, this raises a myriad of questions. Will we need an additional recycling box or bag for our driveway? Will there be a recognizable logo indicating whether our car is recyclable?

And if you purchase a brand-new Astra in 2027, could it potentially contain indicator stalks salvaged from an old Corsa VXR?

Perhaps we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Stellantis has taken the first step by signing a memorandum of understanding with Galloo, a metals recycling company. This sets the stage for negotiations on a joint venture for end-of-life vehicle recycling. While no concrete deal has been established just yet, the potential is exciting.

Will You Be Looking Forward To Recycling Your Car In The Near Future?

Alison Jones, Stellantis’s Senior Vice President for Global Circular Economy, emphasized the importance of making vehicle recycling easy for customers. “Returning parts and materials to the value chain preserves scarce resources and helps our drive to reach carbon net zero by 2038,” she explained. Stellantis aims to implement the program this year, initially focusing on France, Belgium, and Luxembourg, before expanding its services to other car manufacturers.

So, will we soon witness weekly collections of old cars, or will we designate a specific day like “Old Car Day” every third Wednesday?

While the logistics are yet to be determined, one thing is clear: Stellantis is dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of vehicles and embracing a circular economy.

Stay tuned for further developments as this innovative recycling scheme takes shape.
