On 3 September 2026, London became the first European capital to let members of the public hail a self-driving taxi on a commercial app, an event that will be studied for years, and it arrived looking like a slightly unusual minicab. That is roughly how the future always shows up, quietly and wearing ordinary clothes. So let us do the useful thing and separate what has really happened from the marketing, because both are more interesting than the hype.What has actually launchedUber has switched on London&#8217;s first self-driving taxi service in partnership with Wayve, a British artificial intelligence company. It is supervised autonomy, a car that drives itself while a professional keeps their hands hovering an inch below the wheel.This distinction gets flattened in a lot of the coverage, and it should not be. A robotaxi with a paid human minder is a fundamentally different proposition, commercially and psychologically, from one that turns up empty. When can the minder actually leave? Wayve&#8217;s own co-founder, asked precisely that at the launch, declined to name a date and said only that the company is pushing as fast as it can. Britain&#8217;s regulatory framework for genuinely driverless cars is not expected to be fully in force until late 2027 at the earliest. So the empty car, the real revolution, is still a couple of years and a mountain of paperwork away.Wayve, the British firm behind itIf there is a hero in this story, and a reason to feel a flicker of national pride, it is Wayve. This is a British company, founded in Cambridge in 2017 by two machine-learning PhD students, Alex Kendall and Amar Shah, that has become one of the most valuable artificial intelligence firms in the country. Its origin story is properly charming: the founders bolted cameras to a tiny Renault Twizy, the electric quadricycle you might charitably call a car, and trained it to drive itself around a medieval English city using nothing but what those cameras could see. No lidar, no laser scanners, no pre-drawn maps. It worked, and they realised they were onto something.That something is the genuinely interesting bit, and the detail most news reports skate past. Most self-driving systems, including Waymo&#8217;s, lean heavily on high-definition maps, every kerb and lane pre-measured in advance, plus reams of hand-coded rules. Wayve&#8217;s approach, which it calls the AI Driver, throws that away. It learns to drive from experience, the way a person does, so in theory it can handle a road it has never seen. For the maddening, unmapped, endlessly roadworked tangle of London, that adaptability is not a gimmick, it is close to a necessity. Investors have noticed. Wayve is now valued at around 8.6 billion dollars, backed by Nvidia, Microsoft, SoftBank, Uber and, in earlier rounds, names as varied as Richard Branson and one of the godfathers of modern AI. During an early ride, the back doors of a parked van on a narrow side street appeared to swing open into the car&#8217;s path. The Wayve car braked sharply, an alarm sounded inside, and the safety driver took the wheel. Wayve was quick to say the intervention was the driver&#8217;s own call and that its system would have handled the situation perfectly well on its own. Which may be entirely true, and is also exactly what you would say.Separately, a journalist from Bloomberg who took a longer test ride reported two interventions in roughly forty minutes, once while merging into gridlock, once to get around stationary vehicles, with the driver&#8217;s hands poised just below the wheel the rest of the time. I do not offer these as damning. Two takeovers in forty minutes of central London, arguably the hardest driving environment in the developed world, is genuinely impressive, and a human would have had a couple of hairy moments too. But it is the honest texture of where we actually are: a system good enough to astonish, not yet good enough to trust alone. That gap, between astonishing and trusted, is the whole game, and it is measured in edge cases like a van door that may or may not be opening.Who else is coming for LondonWayve got there first, but it will not have the streets to itself for long. Waymo, the robotaxi arm of Google&#8217;s parent company, has been quietly mapping London for months with staffed vehicles and intends to launch its own service, using electric Jaguar I-PACEs. Baidu, the Chinese search and AI giant, is also circling. And Uber, tellingly, is not backing a single horse: it has committed more than ten billion dollars across some twenty-five autonomous-driving partnerships worldwide, hedging its bets so that whichever technology wins, the ride still gets hailed through its app.This is the quiet strategic truth beneath the London launch. Uber does not especially care whose robot drives you, as long as you open Uber to summon it. The company has spent years turning itself from a taxi firm into the layer that sits on top of everyone else&#8217;s robots. London is not really Wayve versus Waymo. It is Uber making sure that, whoever builds the future of driving, it collects the fare.What it means for drivers and passengersFor passengers, the immediate reality is undramatic and rather reassuring: a clean electric car, a normal fare, a professional human still aboard, and the novelty of watching a wheel turn itself through Knightsbridge. If you are curious, it is worth saying yes when the app offers. This is a low-risk way to sample something genuinely historic, and early adopters get the good dinner-party story.For London&#8217;s drivers, the mood is understandably more complicated, and it would be glib to pretend otherwise. Uber&#8217;s own executives have been careful to say human drivers will be part of the London fleet for a long time to come, which is both probably true and precisely what you would say to a workforce watching the first robots clock on. The uncomfortable arithmetic is that every one of these cars currently employs a safety driver, so for now autonomy is adding jobs rather than cutting them. The question is what happens the day the framework allows that seat to be empty, and nobody launching this week was keen to answer it. My own view, for what it is worth, is that the driverless car is now a matter of when and not if, that the when is further off than the excitable coverage suggests, and that the sensible response is neither panic nor evangelism but attention.
