Citroen Reveals C4 and C5 X lovechild, the E-C4 X

Citroen recently revealed their new all-electric 4-door E-C4 X fastback.

The vehicle looks to offer a cross-design alternative to existing hatchback and SUV offerings and draws from previous Citroen models – something that is made immediately apparent by the design (and
name).

Citroen says the E-C4 X is made to ‘slot between’ the C4 and the C5 X, and they really mean
it. The vehicle is 4600mm long, almost exactly halfway between the 4360mm C4 hatchback
and the 4800mm C5 X. The E-C4 X has a 2670mm wheelbase and is based on Stellantis’ CMP
platform, just as the C4 is.

The design direction was driven by Citroen CEO Vincent Cobee’s claim that many customers
have requested an “affordable, responsible and elegant alternative to the mass of hatchback
and SUV offerings.” Citroen wanted the car to fit in as part of the Citroen family whilst
providing drivers with a fresh and distinctive new look.

The fastback design is sleek. Its elegant silhouette comes across as spacey without being too
obnoxious. This design ethos continues inside the vehicle, which is roomy and spacious. It
has 198mm of second-row knee room and boasts a 510-litre boot. It sounds perfect for
families, and Citroen is aware of this but is also trying to market it towards private hire
drivers that may be looking for an environmentally friendly alternative. Time will tell if the EC4 X can make the same waves in the private hire space as something like the Prius has.

In terms of performance and specifications, the E-C4 X has up to 360km of WLTP range and
a 0-100km/h time of 9.5 seconds, with a top speed of 150km/h. It houses a 50kWh battery
pack comprised of 400V Li-ion cells, which can be charged at a 10km/min rate when using a
100kW DC rapid charger.

The E-C4 X comes equipped with My Citroen Drive Plus, Citroen’s infotainment interface
which – surprise – can also be found on the C5 X. This includes a 10-inch HD screen which
makes use of widgets. App widgets are something the general public has become more than
familiar with, and Citroen clearly plans on leveraging this familiarity.
The system comes with a digital assistant that understands 20 languages and can respond to
commands for climate control and audio media. While much of this may seem gimmicky,
the E-C4 X’s navigation system certainly isn’t. It includes an Over-The-Air Map update
service provided by TomTom, with the maps automatically updated on a monthly basis. The
navigation package works on a subscription basis, where the cost can be integrated into the
vehicle price

Citroen has stated that the C4 X, petrol and diesel variants of the vehicle, will be made
available in select regions, with the UK only getting the electric version.
The E-C4 X will be available to buy from November of this year at the earliest, with deliveries
scheduled for the first quarter of 2023
