Exciting news for BMW enthusiasts! The BMW X5 M Competition SUV and the stylish BMW X6 M Competition will be getting a mid-life refresh next month. However, the new and improved models will come at a higher price, starting at over £123,000.
What makes these vehicles stand out is that they will be the first BMW M-tuned cars to feature a hybrid-assisted powertrain. The electric motor is mounted on the crankshaft and powered by a 48V battery, providing an extra 12bhp and 147 lb-ft when needed, which will enhance their mid-range power. The previous 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine has been upgraded to deliver 616bhp and 553 lb-ft of torque.
The X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition will reach a top speed of 155mph but can be raised to 180mph with the optional M Driver’s Package. They can accelerate from 50-75mph in 3.2sec in fourth gear, thanks to the mild-hybrid set-up. While the standing acceleration is 0.1sec slower than their predecessors, both cars can hit 62mph in just 3.9sec.
BMW’s M Steptronic eight-speed gearbox and Active M differential at the rear, with Adaptive M suspension, now featuring reworked dampers, are all standard features. The vehicles also come with blacked-out kidney grilles, twin-dual M Sport exhausts, forged alloy wheels, slimmer LED headlights, and Competition badges. The X6 M Competition also features a black spoiler lip.
Inside, the X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition are clad in merino leather, feature the dashboard-wide BMW iDrive curved screen and are fitted with carbon fibre shifters. These luxurious vehicles are set to replace the current BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M in the German car maker’s global line-up.
Production of the X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition will begin in April at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in the US, sharing the production line with the X3 M, X4 M, and XM. Although the X5 M Competition starts at £123,350 and the X6 M Competition at £126,050, with various options available, the average sales prices are likely to exceed £150,000.
