BMW finally makes it onto a Marvel film and the will be fighting alongside Black Widow
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has showcased some spectacular cars, from the Audi e-tron GT in Avengers: Endgame to a Hot Wheels themed Hyundai Veloster in Ant-Man and The Wasp. Now, it’s BMW’s turn.
For the first time, BMW is collaborating with Marvel Studios to bring their all-new X3 SUV to the silver screens, having superhero fans watch as the X3 is brought into the action with their favourite ex-KGB, ex-S.H.I.E.L.D. super spy.
Also featuring in Black Widow is BMW’s 2 Series Gran Coupe, which is (if you’re unfamiliar) essentially the 4-door saloon version of the 1 Series hatchback. Of course, having cars appear on screen is a marketing strategy as old as films themself, with pretty much every major car manufacturer having paid appearances in all kinds of films and TV shows.
For BMW, securing a spot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a big deal, as Jens Thiemer, Senior Vice President Customer and Brand BMW, said:
“Having the BMW X3 and the 2 Series Gran Coupé playing key roles in ‘Black Widow’ is part of our marketing strategy, adding strong emotional value to the communication of these models. As emotional and thrilling stories play an increasing role in our brand communication, we are definitely looking forward to continue working with Marvel Studios.”
This collaboration is also said to continue, with this not being the last time we’ll see a BMW in a Marvel film. Could we see Thor failing to use the indicators in a 4 Series or She Hulk running a red light in a 240i?
Mindy Hamilton, Senior Vice President of Partnership Marketing at The Walt Disney Company, also said in a press release that “There is no better vehicle to take us on Natasha’s journey… than a BMW,”
“The X3 and 2 Series Gran Coupé are sleek and agile, just like Black Widow, and we are so excited for the world to see where we’ve been together in July.”
Now, I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t describe a decent-sized SUV such as the X3 to be as agile as a somersaulting superhero. Perhaps something more like a BMW M8 would better reflect the abilities of one of an Avenger rather than a £27,000 small family saloon or BMW’s middle-of-the-range SUV?
