Weird Cars, Absurd Cars, Odd Cars and Rare cars! Absurdity: the quality or state of being ridiculous or wildly unreasonable or, in other words, looking into the strange world of Weird Cars, Absurd Cars, Odd Cars and Rare cars!
So, ‘being ridiculous or wildly unreasonable’. That’s how the dictionary defines absurdity and it’s a concept that we’re all too familiar with when it comes to weird cars, odd cars, absurd cars, odd cars and rare cars.
This Sunday (20th November) marks National Absurdity Day – that one special day of the year where the planet celebrates the most off-the-wall and ridiculous things – but given how crazy this year has been, it’s particularly fitting in 2016.
Get in the spirit of this little-known national holiday by pointing and laughing at the daftest and most preposterous weird cars, odd cars, absurd cars, odd cars and rare vehicles we could find.
The Chevy Trike
Believe it or not, this crazy trike was actually purchased like this.
It was built by a company called Boss Hoss Cycles (US-based, naturally), and this V8-powered trike with a 1957 Chevy rear – named the BHC-9 Chevy Trike – will set you back $58,000 (£46,492) before any extras. There’s even a stereo in there if you look directly in front of the rider.
Its 6.2-litre engine whips up 438bhp and considering the entire trike weighs just 680kg, we can only imagine how frighteningly quick it is.
Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ thang
They say you can’t buy taste and this love letter to gangsta rap is proof of that. The whole crew’s here: Biggie, 2Pac, and N.W.A.
There aren’t many details about this pimped-out Bentley Mulsanne but after a little digging, we found out that this shot was taken at a show stand from Iced Out Emz, an aftermarket mods company that specialises in Swarovski-encrusted car emblems. Mmmm, tasteful.
Barbie’s flying Jimny
Somebody converted a Barbie pink Suzuki Jimny into an aeroplane. Just read that last sentence back again; there really isn’t anything else that needs to be said.
Sadly, it’s flying/driving/whatever days are over. A quick registration check reveals that it hasn’t been taxed since November 2009 and has been without an MOT since March 2010. Oh, and it was originally bright yellow, so perhaps its disappearance from UK roads is for the best.
Bric-a-brac Beetle
Who knew there was an art to sticking random tat to the outside of a VW Beetle? There’s also a water fountain in the back seats.
The Fat Car
Devised by Austrian sculptor Erwin Wurm, the Fat Car is an actual Porsche, plumped out with styrofoam and fiberglass to produce a significantly chubbier car that probes the link between power, wealth and body weight. Apparently.
The Amphicar
Ever wanted a car that was actually a boat too? Then you want an Amphicar.
A portmanteau of ‘amphibious’ and ‘car’ (in case you didn’t get that), it was launched at the start of the 1960s but by 1965, it was out of production after a run of just 3,878 units.
Lyndon B.Johnson – the 36th President of the United States – owned one and would famously prank guests at his Johnson City Ranch in Texas by screaming that the car’s brakes had failed and roll into a lake before casually sailing about.
Shame then, that he didn’t pursue a career in comedy after his stint as US President. So that’s it a choice of the best weird cars, odd cars, absurd cars, odd cars and rare vehicles we could find.
