Boxy cars are such a drag. It’s all about sleek aerodynamics.
One important part of a car that is often overlooked by consumers is aerodynamic efficiency. It’s a substantial factor to fuel consumption on ordinary cars and also affects performance when travelling at speeds which is something supercar and sports car manufacturers have to consider.
Aerodynamics are also important for electric cars, which are becoming increasingly popular with each year. A low drag coefficient means a longer range for electric cars and manufacturers work hard to bring this drag coefficient number down to as low as possible by using thing such as aerodynamic wheel covers and removed wing mirrors, as seen on the Honda e.
Here are five of some of the most aerodynamic production cars today.
Mercedes-Benz EQS
The EQS is Mercedes’ brand-new luxury saloon designed to rival cars such as the Tesla Model 3. To maximise range, the EQS has been designed to be as sleek as possible, achieving a very impressive drag coefficient of just 0.2. This makes the EQS the most aerodynamic mass production car in the world.
Deliveries are scheduled for later this year and we can’t wait to see one out on the road!
New Tesla Model S
According to Tesla, their new and refreshed Model S due later this year has an incredibly low drag coefficient of just 0.208, although it hasn’t been confirmed which model has achieved this. It could be the range-topping Plaid Plus model which is built for extreme acceleration as well as a very large range of around 520 miles.
Mercedes-Benz A-Class saloon
The A-Class saloon is a new take on the very popular A-Class hatch. Looking like a squashed C-Class, the A-Class saloon offers extra boot space and a sleeker silhouette which has achieved a very low drag coefficient of just 0.22.
BMW 5 Series EfficientDynamics
This particular model of 5 Series was built for efficiency, which is how it achieved a low drag coefficient of just 0.22. Using trickery such as active shutters in the grille and more aerodynamic alloy wheels, this full-size saloon managed to lower its drag coefficient, therefore saving on fuel.
Tesla Model 3
Thanks to the Model 3’s lack of a front grille and smooth profile, a drag coefficient of 0.23 was achieved by Tesla’s smallest production car. Until the new Model S releases, this is Tesla’s most aerodynamic model and also the cheapest available. With each aero tweak, the Model 3 gains extra mileage range, making it even more appealing to those looking to get their first electric car.
