For the earliest car on the list, cast your mind back to 1990 when the Lexus LS 400 was launched. This was a one model specification that offered a terrifically smooth and quiet ride. With a 250-hp 4.0-liter V-8 front engine and an executive feel this was the dream car for many 90s kids.
The 1991 Honda Accord offered simplicity, durability and reliability; while it may not have the most exciting styling, it was certainly a popular family car that was both compact and comfortable.
Who doesn’t love the 1992 Mazda MX-5 Miata? It appeals to all ages, a charm that hasn’t been lost even more than 20 years on, and not only does it sound brilliant but that removable top just adds another level of ‘cool’ – keeping it 90s here!
1993 gave us the Porsche 968 Club Sport, now considered a vintage classic, which was only available in Coupé. Porsche swapped out rear seats, electric windows and central locking for racing seats, a sports steering wheel and 17” alloy wheels for that sporty feel which is just fine by us.
The Dodge Ram of 1994 was inspired by heavy trucks of the time, bringing all new styling and a fresh look. This “big rig Ram” was roomy, aerodynamic and even had reclining seats that were a first for regular cab pickups.
Simply put, the Acura Integra GS-R of 1995 is a fun car that screams ‘nineties’. It provided an all-round great everyday driving experience since the handling meant it was easy to control and had great traction.
The dependable Mitsubishi Montero from 1996 can still be seen around today, not that you can really miss this tall SUV. With this model, the Super Select 4WD system was introduced and the Montero’s technology was far beyond that of competitors.
Here’s a beauty from 1997, the Lotus Elise GT1 with its carbon-fibre body and an aluminium chassis taken from the original Elise. The stats are pretty impressive; 580 horsepower, top speed 200mph and a 0.6 time of 3.8 seconds – what’s not to love?
Perhaps the most instantly recognisable car in our 90s selection, the Volkswagen ‘New’ Beetle sparked a Beetle revival in 1998 with its new design. The public fell in love as soon as they set eyes on this updated version that gave us a range of advanced features without losing that classic feel we’d come to know and love.
Finally we have the most recent vehicle, a classic Ford. Part of a limited production run, the 1999 SVT version of the Ford Contour was a sophisticated sedan with sporty aspirations. It went from a car that couldn’t quite find its place in the world, to one that now has a loyal fan base online and through fan clubs, what a turnaround!
