Alfie Allen, of Game of Thrones fame and brother of one Miss Lily Allen, has joined Britain’s America’s cup team Land Rover Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) in New York. Chosen by Sir Ben Ainslie himself, Alfie became part of the team of sailors who competed in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series event on Saturday 7th May.
Taking some time off from rehearsing his West End debut appearance, Alfie and the rest of the Land Rover BAR team took to the Hudson River to take on the America’s Cup Defenders Oracle Team USA. Eyes were fixed on the British team that the Game of Thrones star joined, as they practice raced on Saturday and Sunday last week.
Donning a wetsuit, instead of furs for the occasion, Alfie climbed aboard the catamaran a novice and left the competition as an equal to the other sailors and the deserved sixth man completing the group. Joining Sir Ben on the stern, Alfie admitted how exciting it was to be a part of this experience: “I’ll be honest, I’m not an avid sailor but being sixth man is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
The Land Rover BAR team was launched in 2014 by Sir Ben and it’s his aim to challenge for Britain and bring the America’s Cup back to Britain, where it all began in 1851. It seems that he’s well on his way to reaching this goal, as he’s leading a British entry team that is more than capable of taking home the prestigious trophy.
There’s a lot of expectation on the team, as Britain hasn’t managed to bring the prize back home yet but so far, it’s looking good. As the catamaran is made and sponsored by British automotive manufacturer Land Rover, every care has been taken to ensure that the boat is a strong and efficient competitor. The team has even put sustainability at the heart of operations since launching the team with Exclusive Sustainability Partner 11th Hour Racing in 2014.
We look forward now to 21st to 24th July, when Land Rover BAR will be competing in a second Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series event at its home of Portsmouth.
