We spoke to you recently about the new Citroen C4 Cactus and how it’s perfect for long summer drives to the beach, and it got us thinking about road trips.
Although the British road network isn’t as extensive as the ones our friends across the pond are used to, driving holidays are still fairly popular, particularly with those of you who love going cycling too.
There must be plenty of you who are familiar with long journeys down to sunny Cornwall, or holidays that start in England and finish up in France, and we know as well as you do that if you don’t have the right car for the job it can spell disaster.
With this in mind, we’ve had a look at five cars that we reckon are among the best to go a-travelling in, but never mind us – what do you think? Let us know about the driving holidays you’ve had.
SKODA Yeti(s)
Although we still struggle to get on board with the name of this car, it and its variations are otherwise pretty hard to fault.
If you’re going to be going on holiday, we would recommend the off-road version of the Yeti, as it’s able to handle longer drives and tougher conditions than the city variant.
Even better than this is the SKODA Yeti Adventure special edition, which has more power and roof racks for you to have extra space for your holiday essentials.
Regardless of which one you choose, be assured that space is ample in this car, whether you’re stretching out in the cabin or filling up the boot.
Jeep Cherokee
This motor is for people who are serious about travelling because its engine packs a punch and it can withstand a huge amount of weight on the roof rack.
Not only this but the Grand Cherokee version of the car was named as one of the top ten best cars to own in an Auto Express survey filled out by drivers themselves.
A massive range of diesel and powertrain engines are available and the fastest sees the model race from 0-62mph in four seconds, which is going to keep you well ahead of the pack.
SKODA Octavia
Yup, we’re back on the SKODA bandwagon, but can you blame us? The Czech-based manufacturer really knows what it’s doing when it comes to making cars that can go the distance.
This is really one for cyclists to consider, as it was practically built for roof racks and the estate has an expandable boot, which has a maximum 1,740-litre capacity.
SKODA UK is well known for providing vehicles to the Tour de France and the Tour of Britain among many other cycling events around the world. In fact, the manufacturer has been the official partner of the Tour de France since 2004, so there you have it.
Volvo V70-R
Surely no surprises here, as Volvos are widely recognised to be among some of the most dependable cars on the market in virtually every country around the world.
We favour the V70-R model though as it’s particularly roomy – which will help to keep you and the kids happy – but it also feels reassuringly torquey when you’re driving it.
Volvo is also a manufacturer keen on the environment so you can be sure that you’ll get plenty of miles to the gallon in one of these.
Honda Accord Hybrid
What you’re really looking for from a car to take on a road trip is something that can do an almost insane amount of miles, which is what led us to the Honda Accord Hybrid.
This car can do a range of over 700 miles on a full tank, just imagine the possibilities and the places you can get to on your trip.
Although it’s not as blessed for space as the Volvo or the Octavia on the list, there’s still plenty of space for a family (or friends) of four.
